Viola Spolin’s Influence on Acting Schools

The Viola Spolin technique is now used in acting schools around the world.

Viola Spolin was born in November 1906 in Chicago. She became a director, theatre educator and actress throughout her lifeline and became a well-known name in the acting business. While she was a director, she came up with “theatre games”. These “games” were based around individual preferences, such as the creativity and imagination of separate actors and actresses. In her own words though, these “games” weren’t made up, she didn’t sit at home and think them up, she made them out of “necessity”. Whenever a problem arose while she was directing, she thought of what to do on the spot and essentially let it take it’s own way according to how the student responded. Basically, these simple “games” transform complicated theatre structures into games that are easily understandable from a student’s point of view learning something new. Viola Spolin unfortunately died in November 1994 in Los Angeles, aged 98.
