Although acrylics are seen as a quite modern medium for artists, they have been around for a while now. Many artists use acrylics in the same way they would use oil paints, and indeed, they can perform many of the techniques typical for oil painting with some degree of success. Artists who produce dog portraits or house portraits may also turn to acrylic as a replacement for oil, with the main advantage being the speed in which they dry. However, acrylics are no replacement for oil. Acrylic tends to go through a slight colour change when drying, often being slightly darker in tone than the wet paint, there speed of drying also makes it difficult to produce some of the more delicate tonal values tricker to produce and colour glazes have to be applied very quickly to avoid being left with annoying brush marks.
Acrylic though comes into it’s own in two different techniques that are particularly useful for abstract work. Firstly, acrylic lends itself to using masks. This is a great way of producing a hard edge in paintings that rely on geometric shapes. Use masking take to section of areas of the painting before applying the paint, remove the tape when the paint is dry, but do not apply it too thickly or the edge will not be clean when the tape is removed. This technique is also useful for creating thin lines and more delicate forms. Another technique that is most suited to acrylics is it’s ability to be applied to unprimed cloth. This can be utilised when the paint is thinned so enabling it to be dribbled onto the canvas in an abstract way (a technique perfected by Jackson Pollock).
However, there is one oil painting technique that acrylic does make slightly easier, wet over dry. Here the painting is produced in layers, so that when the first layer has dried the next layer can be painted over the top, allowing the paint from the first layer to come through. As the acrylic dries so quickly, this technique can be done very quickly.
